Jazz Fest 2012: Galactic members spread across the city for various side projects

One of the great things about New Orleans during Jazz Festival is that different musicians that rarely play together form special super groups. Today I’d like to feature 3 such super groups, all of which feature members of New Orleans’ own Galactic.

First up is Good Enough For Good Times, which features Jeff Raines on guitar and Robert Mercurio on bass, both members of Galactic. In addition, an up and coming drummer that you want to know about, Simon Lott. And rounding out this Meters-esque quartet is Chris Spies on organ. On this night they were joined by guest saxophonist Lucas Ellman (the younger brother of Galactic’s own Ben Ellman). Check ’em out:

Next up is Garage A Trois, which, as many of you already know, consider New Orleans their homebase. Their early show at One Eyed Jack’s on Friday of the second weekend has become a tradition for many. This year it was hosted by our friends at Live Music Blog NOLA.

Below you will find a few videos I was able to capture. Although I will admit that the songs I happened to shoot are rather tame compared to some of the other stuff they got into this night (including a punk-rock version of Ween‘s “It’s Gonna Be A Long Night” and an extended “iPhone/Android rap”, both led by Mike Dillon, and both of which I captured with my eyes but not my camera.)

The last super group I want to feature is Dragon Smoke. It consists of Ivan Neville, Stanton Moore, Robert Mercurio and Eric Lindell. This group, put together by Boom Boom Room Presents, began as a Tuesday night tradition in 2003 at the Dragon’s Den, moving to the Blue Nile in 2006 and to One Eyed Jack’s in 2009. Every Tuesday between 1st and 2nd weekend of Jazz Fest you can find these four musicians catering to the locals and any other hardcore fester’s that make it down for the full 10 days of debauchery.

These videos of Dragon Smoke were shot by the incomparable Marc Millman. Check out his photos from this show and more more of his Dragon Smoke videos.

John Medeski, Adam Deitch & Skerik 1.5.12 @ Le Poisson Rouge, New York City – VIDEOS with AUDIO UPGRADE

Shortly before boarding Jam Cruise 10, Adam Deitch and Skerik joined John Medeski for an improvisational freak out at New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge. It was a pre-show for NYC’s 2012 Winter Jazz Fest and also featured Jessica Lurie‘s new ensemble (featuring Will Bernard) , Marc Ribot‘s Young Philadelphians, and up and comers, Red Baraat (who have a crazy sound of New Orleans brass band funk mixed with Indian bhangra) .

Some of you may have noticed that our friend jamjoints posted 40+ minutes of video of the Medeski, Deitch, Skerik set on youtube last week. He was gracious enough to supply me with the raw video files so I could upgrade the audio (kindly recorded on stage by Mr. Eric McRoberts). So here it is. 40+ minutes of improv including a cover of John Coltrane‘s A Love Supreme.

BTW, the audio download for the Medeski, Deitch, Skerik set is here.

Also, if you want more of Medeski Deitch & Skerik, check out this previous blog post: http://funkit.virose.net/?p=1027.

And one more thing. Don’t forget to follow @jamjoints on twitter for daily postings of new recordings on etree and Live Music Archive.

SKERIK, SKERIK, SKERIK! – 1 with Freekbass in the Silent Disco – 2 with Garage A Trois – 3 with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey

Continuing the Bear Creek Music Festival video flood, we have 1 video of Skerik with Freekbass in the Silent Disco, 2 videos of Skerik with Garage A Trois, and 3 videos of Skerik with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. How’s that for a christmas gift?

The Silent Disco is a new concept at music festivals, where everyone in the audience wears wireless headphones with a direct feed to the music. I caught a couple of DJs in the Silent Disco and it was really neat to take your headphones off and listen to the sounds people make.

Skerik & Freekbass, though, took it to another level. The sounds this duo made in my ears were stirring, exhilarating, and unique. Unfortunately these sounds will probably never be heard again, as I didn’t bring an audio recorder to get a SBD patch (fingers crossed that the soundguy or someone affiliated with the festival recorded it). You can check out this video, but you definitely won’t get the full experience. I guess I could have held the headphones up to my video camera’s external microphone and picked up some of it, but I didn’t think of it at the time…

Next up, two Garage A Trois videos. Just take Skerik, Mike Dillon, Stanton Moore, and Marco Benevento, put them in jumpsuits in 30 degree weather in the Florida swamp, and this is what happens.
