Today I’m hitting you with a double shot of psychedelic West Coast funk. Along with Orgone (see my post from earlier today), Monophonics are in the vanguard of current California acts that are bringing their own style of psychedelic funk and soul to the rest of the world. If you think funk is dead (see Funkatopia’s recent conversation starting article), these bands will definitely prove you wrong!
Monophonics – Part 1 of 2
April 9, 2013 – Lexington, KY @ Willie’s Locally Known:
??? > I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing, Everybody’s Got A Thing (Funkadelic cover), Foolish Love, Thinking Black, I Cannot Make It (Sly & The Family Stone cover)
Monophonics – Part 2 of 2
April 9, 2013 – Lexington, KY @ Willie’s Locally Known:
Check Out Your Mind (Curtis Mayfield cover), Band Intros (Big Poppa > The Message) > Say You Love Me > Love & Happiness (Al Green cover), High Off Your Love, There’s A Riot Going On
If you like what you hear I recommend checking out Monophonics recent album, In Your Brain, which was produced by Orgone‘s Sergio Rios.
A tradition since the very first Bear Creek Music & Art Festival in 2007 is the Saturday night DumpstaJam featuring Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk and all of their friends. In fact, it was hearing recordings of the DumpstaJam each year that convinced me that I HAD to make it down to Live Oak, Florida to experience the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park for myself. (and it sort of prompted me to start this blog)
2011 was my first time to Bear Creek and I was able to capture a thick slice of funk, the likes of which can only truly be experienced late night in New Orleans or late night in these Florida woods…
PART ONE:
(1) Fight The Power [Isley Brothers cover] (w/ Freekbass & Nigel Hall) >
(2) Bass Duel (Freekbass vs. Louis Cato) >
(3) What Is Hip? [Tower of Power cover] (w/ Freekbass, Louis Cato, Nigel Hall, Eric Krasno & horns)
(4) Dr. Funkenstein [Parliament cover] (w/ Jonathan Lloyd, Rashawn Ross, Khris Royal, Ryan Zoidis, Louis Cato on trombone, ??? on sousaphone, & Nigel Hall)
PART TWO:
(1) Miss You [Rolling Stones cover] (w/ Matt Grondin on first guitar solo, Joey Porter, Billy Iuso on second guitar solo, Nigel Hall on just a little organ)
(2) Livin’ In A World Gone Mad (w/ Andrew Block & Skerik)
(3) Higher [Sly & The Family Stone cover] (w/ Eric Krasno, Zach Deputy, Corey Glover, Derrick Freeman, Louis Cato, Nigel Hall, & horns)
UPDATE: A new audio source has surfaced, which, in my opinion, has slightly better quality. Audio taper travelinbeat posted his recording of this superjam in February of 2013 as 24 bit flac files (which are no longer available). I have converted to 16 bit flac and you can download travelinbeat’s new source right here:
MP3 (travelinbeat source): NO LONGER AVAILABLE
16BIT FLAC (travelinbeat source): NO LONGER AVAILABLE
24BIT FLAC (travelinbeat source): NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Also, Bonnaroo365 has posted 4 youtube episodes about this superjam, a total of 39 minutes of interviews, behind the scenes, and live footage. The videos have been embedded at the bottom of this post.
